Your inability to get your facts straight are also unprofessional. The situation in question actually happened on AM Northwest. A number of internal emails have been sent out to employees regarding it, and warning about repurcussions should it ever happen again. Perhaps you should check your sources before posting next time.

There were actually TWO separate incidents. One on AM Northwest and one on the News.
Both of which, understandably, resulted in serious warnings.
Not enough management and oversight. Fine 'em.
The fact is, someone wasn't paying attention at KATU and that's how the 'flub' got on the air. Too many stations are so stripped down of oversight and management, that all kinds of stuff gets on the air - some of its actionable, some not. What it does, though, is rub a little shine off the luster of what was once a good tv station.
There's no oversight, no control, no editing, no approval...just get it done and hustle it on tv and hope no one catches the mistakes. I, for one, believe the FCC should take punitive action and here's why: It might finally send the message that running these newsrooms on the cheap is actually more expensive - when fines and lawsuits are factored in for sloppy editing/reporting/writing - than doing it with less. I say, $50,000 in fines and the next time - double it.
Poor Leadership at KATU
It doesn't matter who is at fault in the news department, this is an example of poor leadership at the top. This is why they can't seem to find success in the morning news shows or ANY newscasts for that matter Does anyone know if a formal complaint has been filed with the FCC?

On the 4:30 today (Thursday), Knapp mistakenly reported both folks on the Beaverton-Hillsdale accident had now died, when in fact the wife has still survived. They had a quick correction, but jeez that was tacky to say the least. Imagine if you were personally/famillialy (sic) involved in some way.

Level playing field...
So why is everyone attacking KATU for their flub which according to internal emails they've admitted to, and put policies in action to prevent it from happening again, while over at KPTV a month ago the "F" word showed up for 4 seconds on the air during a Fox NFL game between New Orleans and Philadelphia. In TV Technology, a trade magazine, the discussion was taken up as to what might happen in this instance. The reason no action as been taken is because Fox is currently in court over some indecency issues and one particularly regarding the use of curse words on television. It's pointed out that there is not set list of words that cannot be said or shown on tv and the "F" word is among them. Here is a link to that article.

Why not promote from within?
Too bad KATU didn't promote from within. They already have some good anchors that would have worked well in that spot with Carl.
They need to shake it up!
I'm glad KATU is bringing in some new blood for their morning news. The current crew isn't having much success. They will finish a distant 3rd place in February. When I see their ratings each day, I realize they're not really in the game anymore.

Aren't they under an obligation to let the FFC know that they violated the rules? Isn't it like golf? I think they do.....does anyone know?

Obscene Language on KATU
What was the date of the show that aired the obscenity? Also, I think it would be great is someone filed a 475B with the FCC (this is the Obscene,Profane and Indecent Broadcast Complaint Form that you can download from the FCC website). I think it would be great to track the progress of the complaint on the OMI web blog.
AM Northwest
I'm not an insider, but a viewer. The above call out for AM Northwest is disturbing in light of the fact that last Thursday or Friday during the cooking segment, Helen commented that spaghetti without meatballs was Female Spaghetti as it had no balls. Not sure who is paying attention at KATU but it would seem that they are asleep at the wheel.

the KATU 11pm news flub happened on Tuesday night of this week.
LET ME BE CRYSTAL CLEAR
I do NOT encourage people taking punitive actions like this against local stations. This was a flub and I don't agree that stations should be punished for them. Focus on the egregious. This was a mistake--a really stupid mistake that I'm sure will result in some punitive internal actions. It should end there.
The current FCC is on a witch hunt "for the children's sake." God forbid they should hear an accidental swear word in a crowd at a live sports event! Think of the children! You know, I think of the children when I think of media consolidation and how it's narrowing the number of voices they'll be exposed to. But that's me.
If KATU does get reported for a violation, we'll be tracking it on OMI; we'd have to. But I don't encourage it nor support it.
Plus also? This entire conversation is off topic.

I am not in the media business either, but rules are rules. KATU should police themselves just as other TV and radio do. If they made a mistake, they should pay the price. It's called integrity.

I'm going to buck the trend
I'm going to buck the trend and actually post on the ORIGINAL TOPIC! Watch out, here it comes! I am excited to see our new anchor. And, unlike many of the recent PDX new-hires, she has MAJOR MARKET EXPERIENCE! I think that the KATU morning team, aside from Rhonda, has had difficulty just connecting with viewers. Carl is a decent PM anchor, but not a very good AM one. I think his niche in Portland really is weekend evenings. I think Carl Click and Anna Song would be a good weekend combo and I personally would love to see Mike Donahue take Carl's spot on the Morning and Midday news at KATU. Mike definately connects with Portland and it's a shame KOIN won't capitalize on that. I think Mike D. and Angelica T. along with Rhonda (Gotta love her!) could have the potential to make me switch from GDO to KATU :)
New Morning anchor SUCKS
Angelica may be from a MAJOR MARKET, but her anchoring is terrible. Shes not good for the morning spot at all. Whats wrong with KATU. She cant even pronounce NIKE. I think Carl is great in the morning, we need someone with a smile and some humor. What was wrong with pairing up Anna Song or Susan Harding with him. I thought they were both great.
A couple of things: A) Anna
Anna Song is on the morning news again this morning, no sign of the new hire from Boston. Anyone else wondering how in the world KATU isn't featuring Song more on the station? She's terrific on hard news, investigative, just about anything she does is really crisp and good, and on the weekend and morning anchor she just plain connects. Does she sleep?!? Heard a bigwig in our newsroom talking yesterday about what it would take to steal her from KATU. I'm thinking, not much. Matter of time before KATU loses her to the network anyway, or she bolts across town to a better station. Never met her personally, but can't say she should be happy at a place that doesn't show much obvious love. Strange place, KATU.

I'm getting sick of all the Anna praise. I'm starting to feel like you guys are plants to try to help her get more money or a better contract or something. Why don't you ask her producers and co-anchor what it's like to work with her. These days, I don't think it's been as "great" as you're all saying. Like, maybe going missing for hours during breaking news and no one being able to find her? There are a lot of great people that work in this market. Give them some credit, too.
Not BAD, just nervous
Angelica is very pretty. Give her time, she'll relax in to the market. Right now she is very stiff probably because this is all so new. I think she's really only been a reporter. I still think Susan would have been the best fit for that show. Carl, Susan and Rhonda: GREAT COMBO with lots of personality and believability. Maybe it's because I'm "old" but I've learned that patience is often rewarded. If I'm ready to invest in a person, I commit to using what little patience I have to let the person find a way to succeed. Hope I'm offered the same in return once in a while.
