95.5 "Morning Sports Page" with Katy Brown and Kenny Vance Gone Already?!

I can understand why they pulled it.... Katy Brown was AWFUL !!!

..is that it happened that fast. This thing was doomed to fail from its inception. Katy was terrible, Kenny was average. But this one's on the management. James Derby should have known better. You can only talk about the Blazers summer league team for so long, what you need is sharp, funny hosts.
I hear the station as a whole is hurting too. Also not surprising. Aside from Jim Rome, the overall quality is very poor. They'll be thrilled when football season, and then basketball season gets here.. More games.. fewer horrible local shows.

Colin Cowherd was their competition. Colin is very popular in Portland and just has a better show. No offense to Katie and Kenny, but they were competing against a national ESPN radio show. They didn't have the resources.

I was suprised myself this morning. I heard a spot that mentioned Gavin was taking over soon? Not sure what happened, but I'd love to hear.

use an advertisement as a segway from some blue humor followed by some giggling, his co-host didn't appear to appreciate it, and even mentioned something to the effect of you better hope that they are not listening.

I can only imagine that it was brought to their attention and they weren't happy.

This isn't surprising. Listening to Kenny was like a night at the amateur comedy club, where the comedian thinks insulting people is funny. Katy really offered no insight. And every morning the show topic was essentially, "If you were the Blazers' GM..." How many times can they ask the audience who they'd like to see traded. It's as if no one ever bothered to prepare for the show.

As for the rumor that Gavin Dawson will be taking over, say it ain't so. That egotistical airbag is already killing his evening show during which he calls himself the People's Champ and head of some inane La Famiglia syndicate. Plus, each show's topic is essentially "If you were the Blazers' GM..." Sound familiar?

No doubt the "blue humor" on the air continued behind the scenes and didn't thrill management either, as previous coworkers may remember at other places. There are policies against sexist, racist, and homophobic remarks in the workplace regardless of size of the company these days. Radio is no exception. This is 2008 not 1978.

If you know or have listened to Dawson, you need to understand he's being sarcastic and self-depreciating in most of his comments. Who else would sneak in some Euro Soccer League transactions during the updates when he was on The Fan?
I'm fairly certain he will prepare for the show and broaden the topics. Name your favorite Oregon Ducks Uniform, Should Mike Holgren be in the Hall of Fame and most hated former Blazer are a few possibilities. From what I heard of the K&K show, they were mainly there to give the new format some pub and local name recognition. If a Blazers rep didn't call in on a daily basis, that show would have had nothing. K&K would actually spend time talking about what shows they were going to watch on TV that night. Wouldn't be surprised if the plan was to give Dawson the morning show from the beginning after seeing how he'd do at the 6 p.m. hour.

I myself am a bit disappointed that the show was taken off the air. Kenny was spot on in his Blazer's analysis and I liked the overall local flavor compared to The Herd. I'm not as big of a Dawson fan but I'll still tune in to get the local sports news.

One thing that didn't help the cause was that Katy took TWO vacations in the first two months they were on the air. She was ok on the air and Kenny was fine also, but Gavin Dawson as their replacment?!?!?!? Thats not even a equal replacement. Everytime I hear his voice I can't change the channel fast enough. It's like he is trying to be the next Jim Rome. And one Jim Rome is more than enough.

I don't get the Katy complaints. I thought she did a great job and offered a lot to the show. She's the reason I tuned in! I'm quite surprised to hear it was cancelled, I wondered what happened. It certainly wasn't given enough time to gain an audience. Katy, don't listen to these negative knuckle-heads. You were excellent!

On Monday evening, Dawson and Chad Dooing indicated that they will be working the morning show together. I have a feeling that with those two, the morning show is going to have a very Jim-Rome-wanna-be feel to it.

i have listened to kenny and katy for past month and liked some and got bored other times. kenney's humor sucked and katy's know it all attitude was tiring. but to trade it all for gavin dawson whose best sports talk today was wedding proposals, so interesting. i can hardly wait.

Gavin and CIP were both brought in by Canzano to be sidekicks on the BFT. The afternoon drive show on 955 is the best thing it has going. It will be interesting to see how Gavin and CIP do on their own in the morning without Canzano there to carry. I think they will be good.

K&K were poorly matched. They may know sports reporting, but were not entertaining at all. This one falls on management. There's only so much hard core sports talk that's interesting everyday, ultimately I want to be entertained as I get ready for work or am driving on the road.
Based on what I have heard out of Gavin with his evening show and elsewhwere, The Game should be searching for another morning team soon. He sounds forced and all that "peoples champ" stuff is very tired and booring. His show doesn't make me laugh or think. It's just kind of a rip-off of every sports talk cliche. Maybe the mornings will be different, but this feels like a desperate move instead of a well thought out replacement plan.
It's too bad because The Herd is getting stale. I really wanted to be able to listen to good, ENTERTAINING, local sports talk. GAME - go steal Dan Patrick from across town and put him on live n the mornings. Until then I'm going on-line for DP

First... out with the old.
The show was worth listening to only when both K & K were there. I thought Katy was the better of the two (and had an ability to pull some nationally known interviews)... but, then, Kenny was there everyday (and he'd put himself down more than he would anyone else)... so I'm on the fence with who the better half was. Someone mentioned a valid point of the fact that there really is nothing going on in local sports, worth talking about, every day. My verdict here is that they cancelled it too soon.
Second... in with the new.
I thought G.D. was an untapped tallent back when he gave sports updates... back on the loser channel that thinks D.P. is a better sports RADIO host (he was only close when, way back,Rob Dibble was carrying him). Rome is the only host whoan carry a show, day after day, all by himself in the history of sports radio... period. Colin is the only person close... but on some days he really sucks. All I ask is that Gavin cools it on the pro wrestling quotes (or starts talking about RAW and Smackdown... one or the other). I'm Waiting to hear it before giving a verdict.

Kenny has always had great insights on the NBA and never takes himself too seriously. He's a local talent and has several devoted listeners. I personally am completely disinterested in another national show. They all chase the same stories. I can't listen to Colin Cowherd and his continuous life philosophies he spews at any chance he gets.

I don't know what his contract status is or if he follows sports at all, but I think the Portland market could use a show that focuses on pop culture, politics and sports in the mornings. Kind of like Imus without the bigotry.

July 7th - Mark it down. That's the day I said goodbye to 95.5! I gave Gavin's new show a try, but it is awful. All that "bro", "peoples champ" & "la familia" stuff is so juvenile. The show sounds like something you would hear on a college radio station. These guys are not the first to steal their act from Jim Rome and it just doesn't work.

I live in Beaverton and drive a truck up and down I-5 all day long for work. I listen to sports radio all the time, I was excited about an FM option that could get me through the traffic. Sadly the other stations I listen to heading north into B.C. are soo much better. Seattle - KJR (Mitch in the Morning & Groz and Gas are the best) Everett - KRKO (like The Fish in the afternoons) Bellingham - KPUG (love The Zone - never laugh so hard in my life!)Vancouver - Team 1040 (OK so maybe this isn't the best, but Rick Ball is allright). Some of these stations are in small cities, but they don't sound as small town as The Game.

How many times can you talk about the Blazers before it gets old and boring? Answer = Apparently daily if you're The Game. The morning show put me over the top. It's just not listenable. So until the station growing pains stop and Gavin & Chad are history (along with Wheels and his cliche filled attempt at a show) I am going to satelitte radio and hoping my job keeps me driving up north. Bye bye Game!

I was happy to see that Sports Radio had come to the FM side here in Portland/Salem, I never listened to any of the AM Sports stations since AM stations suck to listen to regularly. I'll put up with the feedback that is inevitable when actually listening to a game I'm trying to follow and going underneath power lines, etc but an a day-to-day basis I won't. When it changed formats and came online, I tuned in. Admittedly more so for Canzano than anything else, I don't necessarily agree with everything he says/writes but I find his work intriguing enough to tune in and read his columns. His human-touch pieces I actually enjoy, like the dad who took his kids to Blazer games even after all the hardship he'd endured.

I like the local-feel of The Game, even if I don't find entertaining all of the personalities on the station. I have found that since it came on the air, I'm not listening to the radio for music much anymore but rather to The Game. It's a nice change, in my opinion. I hope it stays around, even if they work out the kinks with the on-air personalities.

I never understood Kenny Vance as a radio show host. I decided to give the show a chance when it first started on 95.5 the game. I quickly realized that Kenny's laughing, heavy breathing, lack of knowledge, and poor radio skills were enough to turn me back to Collin. I think putting Vance with Wheeler is another bad move. Wheeler is a great host and Vance ruins the show with his bad points, heavy breathing, laughing in the background and continuous "key terms" for things he shouldn't be talking about. I am very disappointed in his skills on the radio and can't understand why people are supporting him teaming up with Wheeler. This is why I am campaigning for Vance to be a water boy. Hopefully he won't screw that up.
