Official--Jammin' 95.5 Flipping to Sports Talk

Submitted by LynnS on Thu, 05/01/2008 - 12:07pm.

It's official: Rhythmic CHR is gone from the Portland dial, and sports talk is coming to FM radio:

Effective May 12, Jammin' 95.5 will switch from its current hip-hop/R&B lineup to an all-sports format, take the name The Game, and move into competition with KFXX (1080 The Fan).

The official announcement is expected Friday.

More than more talk, the move means a new home for the Portland Trail Blazers, Seattle Seahawks and Oregon Ducks. All have been on KXL (750). Also on KXL was Oregonian columnist John Canzano's "Bald-Faced Truth." That show, which moves to a 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. time slot, will be one of three local shows on the new station. Gavin Dawson, recently of KFXX, will host a one-hour show after Canzano, The Oregonian has learned.

The O also says Katy Brown will be co-hosting the morning show with Ken Vance as WWeek reported last week.

I'll have more in a bit.

Canzano called this the biggest announcement in Portland radio history. Really? Its funny because there seems to be very little buzz so far. I think the fact that Jammin' is going away is the only thing people are talking about. What a disappointment, I thought he was going to tell us David Lee Roth was getting back into radio.

i think its the best move in portland history to change the station..im sick and tired of the radio station pumping out FAKE hiphop that feeds children with crap that doesnt make sense..who cares about the music they play over and over again..i want a real hiphop show rather then 95.5..thank god they are leaving..do i really want to listen to T-Pain and Akon lil wayne and others all the time..mix it up alittle bit..dam..might as well call the T-pain show..death to 95.5..get out of here.

Ok, just for the stats, 40 year old college educated, mountain climbing software engineer, married 15 years and father of four, 80K+. I pretty much listened ONLY to 95.5 for the FAKE hiphop mixes. Guess I'm going to have to find another station to listen to as I pretty much can't stand anything else, even from the 80s when I was in highschool. :-( I guess on the bright side, at least it didn't get replaced with yet another classic rock or country music station (shudder).

This was the biggest beat down in history... Who dunit and why? Can you say "Kooobbbbbeeee Bryant"... can you say "Phhhiiillll Jackson"... the plays were off the chain, the beat down was serious and the end of the story boils down to LA beating down the Spurs at 30 points 101 to 71 baby... it doesn't get any better than that...

Wow, not only are you no doubt only now returning to the Laker bandwagon after a 3 year hiatus, you can see into the future......awesome.

This just seems like an acknowledgment that the kids these days don't use the radio to listen to music. It's not like hip-hop itself is unpopular. Given that, I wonder what terrestrial radio will eventually (d?)evolve to.

Hip-hop is very popular. It's today's dominant genre, aside from country. The problem wasn't the music. The problem was all that foolishness they put with it on 95.5.

Why no music in the morning? Never really got into the Playhouse thing. I like listening to hip-hop. I didn't like listening to THAT.
I bet they drove away a lot of listeners older than 12.

I hope the rumors of 107.5 picking up hip-hop and r&b are true.
Just play the music, folks. Maybe throw in a Tom Joyner or something like that. But no more PK and Kareezie, please.

However,I must say I liked PK when he filled in for Lars. He's a great entertainer, with an exciting voice, and would probably make some waves in a true talk format. I just think he's mis-cast where he is now.

Meanwhile, I'll just fire up my ipod if I want to hear some good hip-hop!

Anyone hear anything about the rumor that 107.5 will be the new hip-hop?

Wow..... Katy Brown is the best they could find ???? Why not Kelly Day ????

Luckily Dan Patrick is back on the air.

I always thought Jammin was the most offensive radio channel out there so no great loss. Saw PK the other night at Taste of the Nation and he looked cheesed off - guess that's why.

I think the new station has Entercom beat on just about every show except maybe the Dan Patrick vs. Chris Myers matchup. The local morning show will prove to be a big winner, and Canzano's show vs. the 1080 fart hour will be an easy KO for the bald one.

Rumor has it that Movin' is flipping to Jammin' and most of the jocks will move as well

I enjoyed listening to Kenny Vance when he was co-hosting a talk show on another station quite some time ago. I felt he did a good job and kept me entertained. As for Katy Brown, I’m not a big fan of hers at KATU, but I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. Given her on air performance on KATU, I’m not certain what to expect. Hopefully, it works out for all parties.

The ESPN Radio line-up seems to be in complete disarray since Dan Patrick left. Cowherd now appears to be one of their few bona fide draws and Scott Van Pelt (!) is now has his own show in addition to his co-hosting duties on the Mike Tirico show.

Can they move Lars over there as well and KXL gets new blood to replace him? Now that would be sweet!

I'm so glad for Gavin Dawson. He deserves it and I plan to listen to his show as much as I can.

It was annouced last night on the K2 @ 11pm that Katy will be hosting that show over there.

...very little splash. You would think if you were going to launch a new local sports station, you'd want to make as much noise as you could. Instead they give us, Canzano, who already has a show, so no splash there. Gavin Dawson, who will always be seen as one step above an intern. And Katy Brown??, the least liked, least watched, sports anchor in town. As much as I can't stand the local guys on the Fan, I'm not sure this new station is going to have much of an impact.

Katy Brown is a chump...Who is she to talk sports? They could have found some chick in a club one night and fed her some lines and it be more entertaining.

I dislike most of Fox Sports Radio line-up, it seems to be aimed at a lower IQ audience, heavy on attitude, low on insight. But the Game's local shows appear to have promise.
Glad to see Dawson back.
I think The Fan has had problems lately generating compelling local content. Too often they mock the local sports scene beyond The Blazers. And it would be okay, but I'd rather find out more about the Winter Hawks, the Lumberjacks or the Portland Beavers than hear about some silly "list" they're trying to put together.

So where does that leave Friday Night Lights? Will The Fan and KUIK continue to do their stuff? That will prob be the only thing keeping The Fan up.

And what about a CSN deal? I think Canzano would like the face time.

Kenny and Katy on 95.5 from 6a-9a. When the Blazers are rollin' or Oregon or OSU is rollin', the local show is going to be where its at. Kenny is very experienced. Katy has personality and all Katy will need to do is be his sidekick.

Also Jim Rome on 95.5 is a huge get.

Also John Canzano Bald Faced Truth on 95.5 from 3-6 p.m. Canzano is the biggest name in the market. Not even close which is why 95.5 signed him up for a long-term deal.

Also Ducks games and Trail Blazers games and Seahawks games live in stereo.

This makes a ton of sense for 95.5 FM.

Is Jim going to be live for all 3 hours?

Sports talk is at its best when there is controversy, when teams aren't playing well. So the above poster is wrong when saying that when the Ducks and Blazers are rolling the local show is going to be where its at. More people may tune into the games but that doesn't mean they will chime in on the local radio show. Remember that conservative radio got popular when Clinton was President.

Also, female hosts have an uphill struggle. They really have to be "out there" and have a sharp edge to them. The Fabulous Sports Babe was like that. In Dallas Jennifer Engel does well and she is called "The Little Ball of Hate". That's her moniker. Being successful in sports talk radio is more than just showing up and saying this player or that team is great and wonderful. Roll the ball out and we will see.

This radio station is stupid. now there are tens of thousands of people who loved the old 95.5 who have no radio station to listen to. i know some people are pumped for this station, but there are already 3 other sports station. there's only on semi hip-hop station now. this is stupid..... Really disappointing.....
