KGW: Pioneer Courthouse Square Studio

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 3:16pm.

You know the empty Powell's Travel Books space? Soon to be an HD studio for KGW. From the press release:

Construction will begin in the coming weeks to ready the Studio for use in summer 2008. NewsChannel 8’s morning and noon newscasts will originate from the studio. The location of the high definition studio will showcase events at the Square in visual detail never seen before. ...

“KGW’s live broadcasts from the heart of downtown Portland will serve as a unique focal point for our thriving urban core,” stated Commissioner Dan Saltzman. “This partnership provides a unique opportunity to showcase Portland’s finest assets while improving the amenities of our City’s Living Room for all who use it.”

I'm not really sure how this improves the Square's amenities, but I imagine it does bring in some rent. How are the logistics going to work for this? Will we need to build a tram between 15th and Jeff and the Square for fear KGW will move to the 'burbs? Time will tell.

How did KGW become the official station of Portland's living room?

Years and years of negotiations... 3 general managers had their hands in it. The first talks date back to 1999, if you can believe it.

It helps that no one else in town has the cash to do something like that.

They can make it like the Today Show – except with homeless people and street punks holding up signs in the background.

Submitted by Tony (not verified) on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 7:08pm.

Gotta say that using that location is a pretty slick move, considering the broad use of the first amendment in this city. The area outside that window is the square, and therefore private property, so they can control what people do out there.

Should be interesting to see the fallout the first time some activist gets the boot and starts screaming about their (non-existent on private property) constitutional rights.

Submitted by theonetruebix on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 11:27pm.

Tony, the Square is not private property. It's a park operated by a non-profit under an agreement with the City. It's governed by the City Charter, City Code, and Parks & Recreation Policies & Rules

Crowds will gather, the occasional tourist will wave at the camera, somebody will ask where Mike Donahue is, and then people will realize
Al Roker isn't there and they will run for their buses "in visual detail never seen before."

Submitted by Spiro on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 8:14pm.

Yep. Very cool. Cements KGW's rep as the local touchstone. And the Square needed a new ride, too...it's been awhile (summer '88) since Willard Scott introduced the Weather Machine live on The Today Show. KGW's Pioneer Courthouse Square studio will have the live audience component of Today, but it'll also be a postmodern equivalent of the Kisn Corner. Hope somebody moons Salesky.

my very first thought is about security. I mean during the shows. Considering that Pioneer Square is the center of most protests, counter-culture, and people running naked in circles, how will they keep that off the show?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 11:02pm.

Gotta bring this up here, because of the above comment and because Channel 8 used to be one of the big offenders. The living room is Pioneer COURTHOUSE Square...named after the building, not some early resident of the area. Pioneer Square is in Seattle, another reason to get it right in Portland.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 01/30/2008 - 1:09am.

The short answer is blinds or semi-translucent glass. They'll be able to hide the crowd when they want.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 01/30/2008 - 4:40pm.

How about the sound?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 01/30/2008 - 11:32am.

I heard a rumor that the station is considering 24 hour security. I think that's a good idea. It would be horrible to have the anchors show up at 4am and find the front glass all smashed in.
I wonder, would security have the authority to curb offensive behavior and remove people from camera view considering this is a public park?

Submitted by James X. on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 9:05pm.

The sole entrance and exit would be right behind the desk, but I'm sure they'll figure out a way around that. Morning and midday protests at the square might become more popular, too, with Russ and Brenda in their audience.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 01/29/2008 - 10:28pm.

Perfect.
This is why KGW is the leading news station in the market. They're redefining the market and taking bold steps that create buzz and excitement. I'm sure this space was available to all other stations in town, but none had the imagination to put 2+ 2 together and come up with a solution to create a high-profile downtown broadcasting location.

This has to be the biggest local broadcasting blunder in history. All they will have behind them in the window will be radical wackos, runaways, homeless bums and drug dealers. KGW managers please take note, that's what makes up your so called Portland's Living Room. Have you ever been to Pioneer Courthouse Square with your eyes open?

There's still time to alter your misguided thinking.

From KGW's website "Current designs envision floor-to-ceiling glass that will enable the public to watch the anchors at work." This doesn't mean that the crowds will be shown.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 01/30/2008 - 2:12pm.

KOIN had a weather studio upstairs in OMSI for a few years in the mid 90's, complete with big glass window. The afternoon shows usually served up the obligatory wide shot of a few people sitting on benches outside the window, but the late newscasts had nothing to see when the museum was closed for the night. I think the public just didn't find the 'forecaster in a box' as fascinating as KOIN management hoped.

How long until an anchor meltdown that everyone sees? Bring your camcorders and see Brenda and Russ scream at a producer a mile away. I can't wait until the YouTube video. That's Must See TV.

I worked with Brenda for a year and never heard her raise her voice once. Russ I don't know but I'd be surprised. Dave yelled good morning to me on his way through KINK's offices for three years, but that's all the yelling I ever heard on morningside...

Here's the first name for it. Let's call it the BUM BUREAU, since that's who will be staring in the window every morning.

Another question, how are the KGW anchors going to feel going there that early and in the dark? Is KGW providing security for each of the anchors as they walk in the door at 3:00am?

I'll bet Rod Gramer would really like to have that $1,000,000 for capital improvements for his news operation. Wouldn't more live vehicles, outdoor cams and field camera upgrades add more to the quality of 8's newscasts.

This seems superficial and foolish. Does the new GM know that most of the station's viewers live outside of Portland and outside of Multnomah county? Has anyone looked at a DMA map lately?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 01/30/2008 - 10:26pm.

...but a studio in Pioneer Courthouse Square seems kinda dumb. What's the point? Are we gonna get live shots of bums urinating on the bricks?

That said, I can see where this will give KGW more opportunities to run some more of those self-serving promos ("most-watched" "most-honored" etc...).

Go get 'em Belo!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 01/31/2008 - 8:42am.

But my prediction is that a downtown studio will be very cool, if used the right way. No other station can match it.. and you're right, it will certainly show-up in promos. Why not? Any other station would do the same thing. Oh wait, they're not willing to invest that kind of money.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 02/01/2008 - 6:38pm.

Of course it's superficial. That's all Gramer focuses on these days.

I for one cannot wait. It's high time someone in this town gave skateboarders and homeless teens regular air time. They'll be the only ones hanging out there between 5 and 7am.

PDX sure ain't New York.
Who the hell do they think will be there at that hour?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 01/31/2008 - 6:36am.

look at other real markets with studios like this (Philly, Chicago, NYC) better than some suburb... where is it? uh Hillsboro?

Submitted by Robert on Thu, 01/31/2008 - 12:22pm.

This is an excellent business move (figuratively and literally) by KGW. They are taking a business strategy that has proven to work by the Today Show over and over and now are bringing it to a smaller market.

All concerns from previous posters are valid. However, I'm sure they are fully aware of the pitfalls that broadcasting from an urban area can bring, and will address them. Even if they continue to pop up after broadcasting begins.

KGW is also instituting an old and worthy business theory that hardly ever fails and I've used it countless times in my own business...selling the sizzle...not the steak. The steak is the news content, it will most likely stay the same. The sizzle is the new "station" in the heart of downtown PDX.

Brilliant.

It'll be interesting to see what KGW does with all this. Let's see - *It's dark outside during the morning show, so folks at home won't see anything of the square.
* At noon, there's no way they'll show square hangers on outside the glass while the anchors are reading stories, so you'll see wide exterior shots every so often. Yawn city.
*Besides, it's the Noon News with a smaller, older viewership. So who cares where they do it from.
* New sets, locations have never done anything to spike the ratings.

How about using the new studio for the dinner hour shows when it's applicable - like when it's sunny and warm or when there's something actually happening at the square.

Or having KGW sponsor concerts on Fridays (yeah, like the Today show) Or having Dave talk to tourists - maybe from as far away as Salem - who want to get on TV, doing his Al Roker imitation.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 01/31/2008 - 5:17pm.

...that's what TV is about.

If you look at what's happening in Portland, KGW is getting their butt kicked by KPTV. Adding a TV studio to Pioneer Square just adds to KGW's already inflated overhead...it does nothing to increase revenue.

Yes, I suppose it seems really "cool" to have a studio downtown on the square, but KPTV is doing just fine out in the burbs (and with a lower overhead too)

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 02/01/2008 - 11:06am.

First -- KGW will share the square space with a security company -- security problem solved.

Second -- Who do you think had the bigger overhead?
KGW.. in a 50 year old building that it shares with KINK and was probably paid off decades ago OR KPTV.. in a brand new place off the Sunset Highway? Want to take a guess which station has the bigger nut each month?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 02/01/2008 - 9:17pm.

FACT: 1501 SW Jefferson isn't a 50 year old building (it was built in the mid 1960's)

FACT: Belo bought KGW TV (and the other KING Broadcasting properties) for hundreds-of-millions in the 1990's...they're still making payments on that purchase.

FACT: KINK radio is owned by CBS radio and pays nominal rent to Belo. KINK FM has no ownership in the 1501 SW Jefferson building.

FACT: KGW has the highest overhead and payroll in the local market.

FACT: KGW's "power-ratio" (revenue divided by ratings) is smaller than KPTV's. (not a healthy sign)

FACT: Belo corporate is aware that KGW's revenue performance is less than impressive.

FACT: KGW's sales department is dealing with significant turnover.

Care to see any more facts?

Submitted by Robert on Fri, 02/01/2008 - 12:56pm.

In this day and age when corporate sponsorships are the norm, KGW won't pay a dime for security, bulletproof glass, auxiliary lighting for the square, free balloons for the kids and cases of Aqua Net for the anchors. Any business would gladly trade their goods or services for the kind of massive exposure KGW can deliver to their captive audience.

It would be cool to see KGW work with the smaller, local businesses around Pioneer Square. That would create a nice, friendly partnership with their neighbors and just might rejuvenate the entire area.

It's all about the synergy, baby.

Who said anything about selling broadcast media?…sweetie.

I didn’t advocate any form of selling at all. Traditional selling would involve an exchange of legal tender and a paper trail…read my comments again and you just might comprehend the value and wisdom of the barter system.

Speaking as one who works with sales and broadcasting, there are rules from the FCC about the exchange of goods and services, even bartered goods. In fact most media outlets have FCC rules for employees about receiving gifts and the cost limits of those gifts (the old payola sheet). We all have to sign forms for the lawyers and the FCC. Trade-out is good but it can be a hassle and is not as easy as it seems. Some stations do 'in-kind' trades, but that also requires FCC notification and sometimes it even has to be mentioned on the air. Ask to see the public record at a TV/radio station next time there is a license renewal.

Visibly Agitated

With the arrival of HD News Broadcasts, we'll now be able to see Tracy Barry, Joe Donlon and others in wide screen. I, for one, am all a-twitter over the possibility. What could be more seductive than to witness their perennially smiling faces, brilliant teeth and happy talk in Surround Sound 5.1? The advent of 1080p will add significantly to KGW's already stellar News credibility. Plus, we'll be able to tell who was out on a toot the night before. HDTV points clearly to sagging jowls, bloodshot eyes and queasy appearance. Should be tons of fun.

Besides, I cannot wait to see every individual raindrop fall behind the anchors as they read from the prompter. That should prove mesmerizing and a real ratings booster. The one question left is, how much will BELO have to pay the Security Guard Corps to prevent the various Bird-Flippers, Exposers, streakers and other social misfits who will be drawn to the studio window for their 15-minutes of fame?
