O: The Buyout Shoe Drops

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 08/22/2008 - 12:46pm.

I'd been told to expect news on the O buyouts/layoffs by the end of the week, and sure enough, here it is Friday and the shoe has dropped:

Citing a deteriorating financial picture, [O publisher Fred] Stickel said the work force must be reduced by a minimum of 100 full-time positions and an unspecified number of part-time positions. ...

"We've" been listening to you!

Submitted by whiffleball on Mon, 08/18/2008 - 2:37pm.

So, the Big O has been listening to us - and are preparing a re-launch of the website.

Of course, they're getting the re-launch after several other newspapers in the chain get the makeover.

The good news: it looks different.

The bad news: it looks the same.

Layoffs at the Statesman-Journal (Updated)

Submitted by LynnS on Mon, 08/18/2008 - 12:02pm.

System-wide, the Gannett papers are facing layoffs and closing open positions, and the Statesman-Journal will be among the affected. This morning I got a copy of an email from SJ publisher Steve Silberman:

Here in Salem, we will not fill some open positions and we will also lay off three employees, or about 1.5% of our full-time workforce. In some areas, we have more employees than budgeted, which I have taken into account. Working with the Operating Committee, we have focused on strategically aligning our resources for future growth. We will make these reductions and notify the three affected employees on Monday.

It pains me to lay off people because I know the financial and emotional toll this will have. I have not made this decision lightly or rashly. As we realign our business, you have my assurance that we will treat employees fairly. The three impacted employees will receive one week's severance for each year of service with a minimum two-week severance benefit. Medical benefits will continue for the length of the severance period.

I don't know who the three people are.

I really hate layoff days.

Update: I hear two of the people laid off were a photographer and a librarian. I don't know names.

CBS Radio Layoffs

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 08/15/2008 - 9:34am.

As reported here in the comments and at PDXRadio, the CBS Radio stations here in town have begun layoffs in advance of the expected sale of most if not all of the Portland cluster. Reports so far are that KUFO MD and midday guy Dan Bozyk is gone as of yesterday, along with KHits morning show team Dave Hood and Carol Batchelor.

The layoff list is assumed to be larger, though. Anyone have the full scoop?

From the mouth of KGW-TV GM DJ Wilson this afternoon:

DJ Wilson wrote:

Double Bogey Yin Yang

Submitted by Hunter Thompson on Thu, 08/14/2008 - 3:22pm.

This past Tuesday, August 12, 2008, I happened to catch the 6:30-7:00 PM block of the Channel 9 News out of Eugene. The new anchors seemed in the vein of the old anchors. The weatherman appeared a bit subdued. Given the whirlwind pace of muggings that have occurred in the newsroom recently, his state of mind should seemed apropos. Everything was in its place until the Sports Report. The sports segment opened cold out of a station break. There was no Sports announcer on-set. No anchor-to-anchor bonhomie. But then, it’s only sports.

KATU: New weekend weather guy?

Submitted by Eric M on Sat, 08/09/2008 - 8:16am.

Somehow, I missed the announcement of the arrival of Carlos Faura, whom I'm watching on KATU news this morning. Not sure what I think. I think I still miss Julia, but I know we must live in the 'now.'

Watching Carlos gesture toward the blank screen behind him, he doesn't yet seem to fit in at KATU yet. Maybe he's still getting used to the geography of the state... it seems references to cities are being read off a prompter, and he doesn't really know where a lot of these places are.

But you have to start somewhere, right? Right.

Weekend Open Thread, Limited Internet Edition 8/8/08-8/10/08

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 08/08/2008 - 1:59pm.

I am stuck some place without internet for a few days, so if you've been waiting for your comments etc to be approved, you'll have to be patient. If I'm lucky I'll be able to hop on once a day. Things will be back to normal, or as normal as they ever are around here, by Monday.

Here's your open thread.

Channel 2,6,8, and 12

Submitted by Hunter Thompson on Fri, 08/08/2008 - 11:57am.

Being a serious student of the human condition, I am always on the lookout for tendencies and patterns. Since I began my tumultuous career on the Oregon Media Insiders web site, I have spotted what can only be described as a most disturbing exemplar, an anti-intellectual orthodoxy that seems to have tunneled to the very core of Portland media members.
